Obi-Wan in Exile – PTSD and Depression

Our next installment of the Obi-Wan in Exile series was a difficult one. The subjects of trauma and depression are often considered taboo, especially when it comes to our fictional heroes. But it’s important to acknowledge such emotional and psychological difficulties as they are as much a part of a character’s story as anything else.

We’re not here to say that Obi-Wan spent every single day of his time on Tatooine moping around the desert and crying – quite the opposite. He would go on to suffer all of these things and yet remain steadfast to his friends and his goals in the nineteen years to come. But, ultimately, his life on the other side of the Dune Sea would not be an easy one, as is often the curse with any exile.

Let’s begin, shall we?

Obi-Wan in Exile – Qui-Gon Jinn

Welcome to another installment in our series of looks into Obi-Wan Kenobi’s time in exile on Tatooine between Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. We’ve tried to mine as much Legends and canon material as possible to help guide you through some of the period’s most common and repetitive themes so that when the new Obi-Wan Kenobi series airs, you’ll be ready.

Not everything he ever did in the entire 19 years will be explored here, but as we said, we’ve tried our best to pick out the most prominent and impactful moments to give everyone a better understanding of exactly what one hermit had to endure out there all alone in the sandy deserts of Tatooine.

As we continue our deep-dive, we want to take a look at one of the only people to keep Ben Kenobi company during his time in exile — Qui-Gon Jinn. His old Master would go on to play an important role in Obi-Wan’s legacy, ensuring that the Jedi was prepared to one day join him in the Force and continue his guidance of Luke from beyond the grave.

Obi-Wan in Exile – ‘Ben’

By the time Episode IV rolled around, Obi-Wan hadn’t been ‘Obi-Wan’ for “a long time…a long time.” Thus, it stands to reason that when we see Ewan McGregor grace our screens again, he will also no longer be Obi-Wan. He will simply be ‘Ben.’

Today we will take a look at our favorite Jedi’s alter ego and why it was an important part of his time in exile.

Obi-Wan in Exile – Owen Lars

Welcome to the second in a series of looks into Obi-Wan Kenobi’s time in exile on Tatooine between Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. There’s no way around it: Owen Lars hated Obi-Wan Kenobi. But why? A young Luke Skywalker could have benefited greatly from the two men working together, but it was not to be so. Here we will look at just a few of the many times the Jedi was rejected by the hardened moisture farmer in an attempt to understand just how fraught with tension their relationship really was.

Obi-Wan in Exile – Vader

While Vader himself was not a common reoccurrence throughout Obi-Wan’s exile, the threat of him certainly was…well until now that is. As Vader so often does, he’s recently made his way back to the forefront of the story and will seemingly loom very large over the upcoming series, thus moving us to start with exactly what that might mean for Obi-Wan and how it might work with the canon boundaries we currently have. Yes, we understand that canon can change and probably will, but we do love a challenge.

One last thing before we begin: (C) denotes current Disney canon and (L) denotes Legends material.

So let’s get on with it, shall we? Let’s talk about Darth Vader. (We’ll talk about Anakin later.)

Hayden Christensen & Ewan McGregor in Revenge of the Sith

With rumors swirling once more about Hayden Christensen signing on to play Anakin in the Kenobi TV series, we were thinking about what sort of part he could play. (Actually, we don’t need the rumors to be thinking about this, but I digress…) And of course, we believe that Anakin (not just Vader), is vital to where Obi-Wan is in this period of his life and his initial inability to let go.

Better Late than Never!

Star Wars Celebration Chicago may have ended nearly three months ago, but Star Wars Celebration Anaheim is already on the horizon! 2019 was the first year we were able to go, and WOW, were our minds blown. It was honestly better than we could have imagined.

Did it have some issues? Sure. What convention doesn’t? But overall, the feeling of STAR WARS LOVE that enveloped you for five days…that over-rode everything. We were among our people.

And like most conventions, Celebration had so many amazing costumers! They honestly ranged from the smallest background character (or even behind-the-scenes boom operators) to all those you’d expect at a Star Wars convention.

It’s time to share the Obi-Wan Kenobi cosplay love! (Lots and lots of images below the cut!)

All we want is everything.

Rumors swirl constantly about whether or not we’ll ever get an Obi-Wan Kenobi stand-alone film. If Ewan McGregor forgot to shave that morning, suddenly that means HE’S GROWING OBI-WAN’S BEARD. Honestly, since Revenge of the Sith premiered 14 years ago, it’s something the fans have called for.

The rumors seem to have stepped up lately with all the announcements for Disney’s upcoming streaming service, Disney+. We all know about The Mandalorian and the Cassian Andor/K-2SO series, and there are talks of even more…so why not an Obi-Wan TV SHOW?

We all know that Ewan is waiting for the call, but in the meantime, we’ve come up with a few million-dollar ideas for what would make an excellent Kenobi series! (Seriously, they’re all right here for the taking, Disney!)
